No Way Down: Life and Death on K2 is Graham Bowley’s narrative nonfiction account of the 1 August 2008 K2 disaster, the deadliest day in the mountain’s climbing history. It reconstructs the summit attempt by international expeditions on K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, in Pakistan’s Karakoram range. Thirty climbers set out for the summit; eleven did not return.

Near the summit, the collapse of an ice serac swept away the fixed ropes needed for descent through the Bottleneck, a dangerously exposed section beneath towering ice cliffs. Bowley uses reporting and survivor accounts to trace the resulting cascade of decisions, failed communications, exhaustion, avalanches, frostbite, and rescue attempts. The book considers courage and mutual aid alongside the risks of crowding, commercial expeditions, ambition, and poor conditions in high-altitude climbing.
