Born in Chicago, Illinois and educated at the University of Michigan as an historian and historiographer, Elizabeth Hawley is an American journalist who has lived in Kathmandu, Nepal since 1960, first as a Time-Life then Reuters correspondent. She managed the Himalayan Trust for Sir Edmund Hillary and was New Zealand Honorary Consul to Nepal for 20 years. Hawley also worked with Tiger Tops from 1965 until 2007. Renowned for her mountaineering and expedition records, which are published as the Himalayan Database by the American Alpine Club, Hawley is an honorary member of the Alpine Club of London and formally recognized by the Nepal Mountaineering Association and New Zealand Alpine Club. She was awarded the King Albert I Memorial Foundation medal and was the first recipient of Nepal's Sagarmatha National Award. In 2004, Hawley received the Queen's Service Medal for Public Services from the government of New Zealand. Bernadette McDonald's biography of Hawley was published in 2005. In 2013, she was the main subject of the award-winning US television documentary Keeper of the Mountains.
