Crime and Punishment (Penguin Select Black Classics / Penguin Classics) is Dostoyevsky’s great 19th‑century novel of sin, conscience and redemption, following a destitute former student in St Petersburg who convinces himself he can commit a “necessary” murder. Raskolnikov kills a hateful pawnbroker (and, in most editions, her sister) believing he is beyond ordinary moral law, but soon finds himself trapped in a cat‑and‑mouse game with the police and, more importantly, with his own growing guilt, as fear, feverish rationalizations and encounters with suffering people force his soul into a slow search for confession and renewal.
