The Women follows Frances "Frankie" McGrath, a privileged 20-year-old from Coronado Island who defies her family's expectations by enlisting as an Army nurse in 1966 after her brother Finley dies in Vietnam. Thrust into the chaos of trauma hospitals, she transforms from a naive novice into a skilled surgical nurse amid airstrikes, romances like her unrequited love for doctor Jamie McGrath, and lifelong friendships with Black nurse Ethel and tough Barb. Back home, Frankie faces erasure of women's contributions, spirals into pill addiction and a toxic affair with pilot Rye, and ultimately finds healing by founding a refuge ranch for female vets called The Last Best Place, culminating at the 1982 Vietnam Memorial.
