Emma, one of Austen’s most popular novels, was dedicated to the then Prince Regent, an admirer of her works. Austen famously wrote before beginning the novel, ‘I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.’ True to her word, Emma is ‘handsome, clever, and rich’ but spoiled and headstrong, with a propensity towards misjudgement. The novel has been adapted into several film, television and theatre productions such as the 1995 American film, Clueless, starring Alicia Silverstone as Emma, and the 2010 Bollywood adaptation, Aisha, with Sonam Kapoor in the lead. There are several adaptations in popular literature too, like Alexander McCall Smith’s Emma (2014), part of The Austen Project, a series in which six contemporary novelists retell Austen’s six major works.
