The Railways in Assam describes the process of introduction of railways and their socio-economic impact in Assam under colonial rule. Placing the expansion of the rail network in Assam within the broader framework of railway expansion in India, the variations in the primary scheme of railways adopted for Assam has been brought out. The role of the railways in accelerating the nature as well as the extent of the economy in the areas they traversed has been emphasized, and their impact on demographic patterns and Assamese society has been assessed. Also covered, are the factors responsible for the failure of the railway network to stimulate the concomitant industrial sector and achieve the goals defined by the colonial administration.
