“The Prisoner of Kathmandu: Brian Hodgson in Nepal 1820–43” is a narrative history of Brian Hodgson, the British Resident in Kathmandu who became known as the “father of Himalayan studies.” It traces his years in Nepal as he navigated tense East India Company–Nepal politics while immersing himself in Buddhism, natural history and the cultures of the Himalayan region. More than a political biography, the book examines how Hodgson’s scholarship on Buddhism, biodiversity and ethnography helped shape early Western understanding of the Himalaya and Asian studies. Set against court intrigues, power struggles and the constraints that left him “a prisoner” in the Valley, it illuminates both colonial diplomacy and the making of a pioneering scholar.
