About the This book has its origin in the desire of the author's fellow-countryman, Mr. Vincent Benedix, of Chicago, to erect a Lamaist temple, either an original or a replica, in Stockholm and another in Chicago. Sir Sven Hedin, to whom the commission was entrusted, elected to make a replica of the Golden Temple in Potala of Jehol, the city which was once the summer residence of the Manchu emperors. The plans and drawings were made and the material—collected even down to the paint—in the summer of 1930 with the assistance of Chinese architects and draughtsmen. At the time this book was being written, the replica for Chicago, with the accessories of the ritual, had reached its destination and was awaiting erection.
