This is longtime Los Angeles County Museum of Art curator Pratapaditya Pal's scholarly study of the representations of Visnuism specific to Nepal, emphasizing the religion's tantric aspects as well as relevant epigraphic and literary material. A handsome example of the Asiatic Society's first hardbound edition. The study not only brings out the peculiarity of that religion and iconography in Nepal, but also points out the differences with Visnuism in India. Particular emphasis is laid on the tantric aspects of Visnuism, a hitherto neglected subject. In reaching his conclusions the icons themselves, all epigraph and literary material pertinent to the theme. One hundred and ten white illustrations considerably add to the value of the work.
